Dahl (with tomato)

    • 250 g yellow split peas

    • 1 onion

    • 3 cloves of garlic

    • 3 cm ginger

    • 3 tomatoes
      or a can of chopped tomatoes

    • 1 tsp chili powder

    • 1 tsp turmeric

    • 1 tbsp masala (curry powder)

    • salt to taste

    • 1 tbsp cooking oil

      Mis en place

      Peel and cut into small pieces.

      Peel and grate the ginger.

      Peel and grate the garlic.

      Cut the tomato into small pieces.


      I pre-soak the split peas, but that is not necessary.

      Boil the split peas for 30 minutes.

      Take a pea between your fingers when it falls apart, the peas are done.

      Fry the onion until translucent.

      Add garlic and ginger.

      Add the masala, chili powder, salt and turmeric and fry briefly.

      Add split peas with cooking liquid and let evaporate for at least 10 minutes.

      Garnish with fried onion and/or tomato.

      Delicious with Dosa.
